Jan.29, At first glance, fashion and science could not be more different. However, when they merge together the results are often groundbreaking. From biomimicry to NASA high-tech garments, over the last few years, designers have pushed the scope of fashion and created innovative collections.
Iris Van Herpen, famous Dutch designer and pioneer of 3D-printed dresses, is renowned for her ability to fuse technology with haute couture. In 2011, she debuted her first collection during Paris fashion week and became a guest-member of the Parisian Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Since then, her evolution has continued and caused a paradigm shift in the fashion world, prompting other designers to experiment with high-end technology. Currently, Van Herpen experiments with metalwork, synthetic fabrics and silk to create gowns that mimic natural structures such as coral reefs, microorganisms, and bone structures. Collections like Sensory of Seas (2020), inspired by sea organisms and Metamorphosis (2022), inspired by the Greek myths of Apollo, Dafne, Arcane and Nafno, showcase her ability to utilize technology to create new materials and patterns.
Coperni, a Parisian ready-to-wear fashion brand, founded by the designers Arnaud Vaillant and Sébastien Meyer, has distinguished itself for actively embracing the use of technology and innovation in its garments and accessories. In the Spring-Summer 2023 Coperni fashion show, both designers worked together with Manel Torres, director of Fabrican Ltd. to develop a spray-on fabric that solidifies itself when it touches skin. Bella Hadid, renowned Palestinian model, opened the show and showcased the development of a dress through the use of this synthetic material.
