October has been a busy month for the Varsity Volleyball team, filled with two wins and one loss, nervous excitement, and an outstanding Homecoming dance if I do say so myself.

This article is for those of you who did not make it to our games, or for those of you who simply want to admire senior Jaebin Im’s outstanding photography, (no Varsity Basketball and Soccer, you can not steal him from us).

Without further ado, here we go.

Let's start off recapping the first game: October 3rd, BEARS vs. Prepa Ibero

An outstanding win from the team, the match finished 3-0, ending the 3rd set with a score of 25-15 with a comical setter-dump on my part.

Comical in the sense that I scored the final point because I left the other team flabbergasted with my sad attempt at a setter-dump. Oops! But hey! If it works, it works.

Jokes aside, the game was a great start to the month, allowing our coach, Polo, to try different formations and strategies, in preparation for the rest of the season.

Takeaways:

  • Sofia Rodriguez will play as an Outside Hitter this season instead of playing as a setter.

  • Alexa Tarrab will sub-in as a serving specialist.

  • We will run a 1-libero system with 2 liberos, Paula Martinez taking the lead in serve-recieve, and Micah Loutensock subbing in for defensive plays.

Now, onto the second game of the month: October 17th, BEARS vs. UIC

SEMI-FINAL CONADEIP

This match tested our mental strength, forcing us to attempt to ignore the opposing team's controversial tactics to distract us, (such as screaming uncontrollably with highly-pitched voices when they had the ball). Yet, Arianna Baquero's resilience beat the odds, with an insane one-handed reception in the second set!

Not knowing what was at stake, the team celebrated as we closed the match with a 3-1 victory, ending the game with Co-Captain and senior Victoria Campos’s lethal serve, causing the rival team to shank the final ball.

In our last huddle before ending the match, the coaches announced that winning the semi-final meant that we were making it to Baja California! (Where the national championship for CONADEIP B would be held), making this the first time in ASF history that the Varsity Volleyball team would do so! Pia Gaona, a sophomore and middle, started jumping up and down, and even some tears were shed from Sofia Rodriguez.

We ended the match with a farewell greeting to the opposing team and immediately ran over to tell our parents of the history-breaking news, who were still simply celebrating that we had won the match.

And finally, we closed October with Homecoming! October 25th, BEARS vs. La Salle (Categoría C)

Following a fun and memorable Homecoming dance to anthem Danza Kuduro, the Bears stepped on the court to start off the CONADIEP Categoría C Championship.

Unfortunately, the team faced a loss, ending the match 0-3. Our mental strengths and spiritswere tested, but after a small reflection from the team and our captains, we came to the conclusion that the other team was indeed better, but that we played well either way, not forgetting to thank our family and friends for still coming and cheering us on.

A rollercoaster of a month, we prepare ourselves for our next big tournament: Nationals. The tournament will take place in Ensenada, Baja California, from November 4th - November 9th.

Here is the game schedule!!

Cheer on the Varsity Volleyball team and encourage your professors to stream the game!
